When looking for a new role two years ago, I was drawn to Bourne Education Trust for their ambitious standards and forward-thinking approach.
I started my role initially as Head of Estates and Procurement with grand expectations of a fast-paced business, and I was not disappointed. We have made real in roads to building a greener Trust, taking vital steps towards creating sustainable and environmentally conscious schools.
Energy efficiency is our top priority, both morally and financially, to protect the planet for future generations. With the emphasis on a now or never approach, we have been implementing energy saving measures and educating our pupils about the importance of sustainable practices to foster a sense of responsibility towards the environment.
Our commitment to reducing waste includes eliminating single-use bottles and partnering with the Olio food sharing app. Promoting sustainable transportation is also essential, with the Trust working on encouraging walking, cycling and public transport, as well as focusing on our procurement processes; ensuring we collaborate with people with the same ethos as ourselves.
Furthermore we strive for sustainable investment in our capital projects and our recent successful bid for a special educational needs free school, Hopescourt School, has ambitions of working towards being the first net zero school in Surrey.
Building a greener Trust estate requires collaboration between schools, families and the wider community but I am confident that, as one organisation, we can (and will!) have a positive impact on the environment and foster a sense of environmental responsibility amongst future generations.
