Having worked in school leadership across a range of contexts, I was drawn to Bourne Education Trust because of its values-driven approach and clear commitment to both staff and student success. When the opportunity arose to join Jubilee High School as an Assistant Headteacher in 2022, it felt like the right next step in my career.
What stood out to me immediately was the strength of leadership at all levels – and how much the Trust prioritises moral purpose, high standards and professional trust. I felt both my work and I were genuinely valued, and that continues to be the case every day.
My role at Jubilee High School
I joined the school with a focus on leading literacy and soon developed strong working relationships with staff across departments. I now act as the senior leadership link for Years 10 and 11 and have responsibility for student outcomes. I also line manage a head of department – a role that allows me to apply my strategic leadership skills in a way that directly impacts student progress.
Jubilee has clear boundaries and a strong professional culture that gives teachers the space to focus on what matters most – high-quality teaching. It also means leaders can lead with integrity, ambition and care. One of the things I value most is our consistent focus on acting in the best interests of both students and staff – it underpins every decision we make.
My leadership journey
Since starting as a science teacher, I've been motivated by the opportunity to have both direct and indirect impact on school improvement. Over the years, I've progressed through roles as Head of Department, Head of Faculty and Assistant/Deputy Headteacher across four different schools. Each position has shaped my approach to leadership – from curriculum design and behaviour systems to sixth form outcomes and strategic planning.
At BET, I've been able to apply this experience in a setting that truly reflects my values and belief in inclusive, high-quality education for all.
Advice for anyone joining BET
If you’re considering a role at a BET school, my advice is simple: go for it. You’ll find supportive leaders, a shared moral purpose and a culture that allows you to make a real difference – not just to students, but to your own growth and development too.
