Growing momentum: reflections and highlights from BET Green Week and our Sustainability Conferences

Back
30 June

This month has been a highlight for environmental action across our Trust. Led by BET Futures' focus on embedding environmental responsibility and sustainability across the Trust and in our curricula, BET Green Week 2025 brought together creative classroom activities and inspiring student-led initiatives, showcasing the commitment of our young people and staff to protecting the planet.

Building on this success, our BET Sustainability Conferences brought pupils from across the Trust together to share ideas, collaborate and develop the initiatives that emerged during Green Week.

Reflecting on BET Green Week 2025

From 9th – 13th June, our schools embraced a comprehensive programme of activities designed to foster sustainable thinking and environmental awareness.

Meat-Free Monday introduced nutritious plant-based meals that supported both health and environmental goals. Thrifty Tuesday emphasised reuse and recycling through upcycled crafts, second-hand exchanges and zero-waste challenges. Wildlife Wednesday celebrated biodiversity with bug hunts, bird feeder workshops, butterfly releases and garden planting activities. Technology Thursday engaged learners in designing sustainable cities of the future, exploring renewable energy and smart living solutions. Drawing the week to a close, Feel-Good Friday promoted wellbeing through mindfulness practices, outdoor activities, and our connection to nature.

Beyond the daily themes, schools organised additional activities including growing competitions, sustainable accessory creation, community litter collections, natural art projects, coffee mornings and eco-themed performances - engaging everyone from our youngest nursery children through to our post-16, sixth form pupils.

We extend our appreciation to every pupil, teacher and community member who contributed to making Green Week a meaningful celebration of sustainable learning.

Sustainability conferences: expanding our impact

The enthusiasm and ideas generated during Green Week continued into our recent BET Sustainability Conferences, which provided opportunities for pupils to share insights, collaborate and develop future plans.

Secondary pupils participated in a full-day conference at The Building Centre in Central London, hosted by The Built Environment Trust. Representatives from each school engaged in inspiring presentations and workshops from sustainability organisations, collaborative discussions about their school's Green Week outcomes and 2026 planning, sessions with Let's Go Zero exploring climate action plans and workshops on retrofitting and sustainable architecture led by RIBA, ECD Architects and The Keegans Group.

The following day, primary schools gathered at Jubilee High School for a morning of focused 'green' learning. Pupils presented their Green Week activities and explored practical approaches for developing school action plans. Discussions covered topics including green recipe development, wildlife habitat creation, such as hedgehog homes, and strategies for engaging the broader school community in environmental initiatives.

We thank Go Green and Let's Go Zero for facilitating these primary sessions and supporting our pupils' journey toward more sustainable schools.

Looking ahead

The sustainability initiatives we've witnessed this term represent the foundation for ongoing environmental action across our Trust. Each school has demonstrated real commitment to environmental responsibility and the ideas shared during our conferences have created a roadmap for future action. From expanding classroom gardens to implementing building improvements, each school is positioned to grow their environmental impact in the coming months and years.

Together, we are building a more sustainable future.
