Josie Bunton

Trainee Finance Officer
Bourne Education Trust

When exploring career options, I was drawn to finance for several key reasons. It offers highly transferable skills, opening doors across multiple industries and providing long-term flexibility. The progression pathways are clear, with excellent opportunities to grow professionally. Most importantly, finance professionals are always in demand - as every organisation, regardless of sector, relies on strong financial expertise.

Why I chose BET
Joining BET was an easy decision. The Trust offers a supportive and collaborative working environment, united by a shared mission: delivering the best education for the pupils in our schools.

I was also impressed by the career development opportunities available. BET invests in its people, and from the start of my apprenticeship, I could see a clear path for growth within the organisation.

My apprenticeship experience
My apprenticeship strikes the perfect balance between study and hands-on experience. I spend one day each week learning online with my training provider and meet with my tutor and peers every fortnight to reflect on our progress.

Assessments every 3–4 months are manageable and well-structured around my work commitments, however what I value most is how directly the theory connects to my daily tasks - strengthening my understanding of finance through real world application.

My role in the finance team
As a member of BET’s central finance team, I help process invoices, manage supplier payments, post intercompany transactions and support finance officers across our schools.

We work within a really welcoming and supportive team, but what makes this work especially rewarding is knowing that I’m contributing to the smooth running of our schools - so they can stay focused on delivering the best possible education for our pupils.

Looking to the future
After successfully completing my Level 2 qualification, I’m now working towards Level 3. I’m excited to keep progressing through the apprenticeship programme while taking on more responsibility within the finance team.

BET has given me a strong foundation, and I’m looking forward to developing new skills and making an even greater contribution to our schools’ success.

Advice for anyone considering a finance career
If you're thinking about a career in finance, I’d highly recommend it. The skills you gain are versatile and there’s no shortage of job opportunities - every business needs finance professionals.

The apprenticeship route has been ideal for me. Learning while earning and applying my knowledge in real time has accelerated my development far more than classroom study alone ever could.
