Penny Casserley

Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead
Hampton High

My journey at Hampton High began in September 2018 when I started as a supply Cover Supervisor. This role was a vital introduction to the school environment, allowing me to gain experience in classroom management and student interaction. It was a challenging but rewarding experience that laid the foundation for my career growth.

In December 2020, my hard work paid off when I was employed directly as a Cover Supervisor by Hampton High. This new role brought more responsibilities and a deeper connection with the pupils. I began to understand the unique challenges they faced, especially those who were vulnerable and in need of additional support.

In November 2021, I took a significant step by accepting the role of Safeguarding Officer at the school. As a Safeguarding Officer, my primary responsibilities included:

  1. Supporting vulnerable pupils: I was entrusted with the crucial task of dealing with the most vulnerable children in the school. These pupils often faced complex issues both in and out of the school environment. My role was to make them feel supported, safe and provide them with someone they could talk to openly.

  2. Signposting to external agencies: To provide the best support possible, I became proficient in identifying when pupils needed assistance beyond what the school could offer. This involved connecting them with external agencies that could provide specialised help, whether it be related to mental health, family issues or other challenges.

  3. Collaboration with professionals: One of the most rewarding aspects of my role was attending meetings with other professionals involved in the pupils' lives. These meetings allowed us to develop comprehensive strategies for supporting our pupils, both academically and emotionally.

As the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead at Hampton High, my work has a direct impact on the lives of the pupils we serve. Every day, I have the privilege of making a difference in their lives, ensuring they have a safe and nurturing environment in which to learn and grow. It's a role that requires empathy, patience and a deep commitment to the welfare of our pupils.

My career journey at Hampton High has been filled with challenges and opportunities for personal and professional growth. I'm grateful for the support of my colleagues and the trust placed in me by the school leadership.

Looking ahead, I am excited to continue making a positive impact on the lives of the pupils at Hampton High and ensuring that they have the support they need to thrive academically and emotionally.
